With the North Shore mountains, beaches, ocean, and forested trails all within easy access, there’s no denying that we have it good when it comes to leading an active lifestyle - good thing too, because there’s also no denying that we have it good when it comes to good food. Think of it as the westcoast yin and yang. Yin: savoury treats and good food. Yang: plenty of opportunities to work off those Yin-induced calories.
A classic yin of life out here in Vancouver is the Legendary Platter from White Spot.
The Legendary is often seen as a really bare bones burger - bun, patty, bun. But ask any die hard fan what makes a Legendary Burger and you’ll be sure to hear about the “Triple-O” sauce. Fans like to play up the mysterious nature of the sauce’s ingredients, while indifferent bystanders will tell you straight up that it’s nothing more than some combination of ketchup, mayonnaise and red relish. Even so, rumours abound as to what makes the Triple-O the signature sauce of some of the best burgers in BC.
For me, the goodness is more than just the burger. When I go to White Spot, I relish (pun intended after the fact) the full course experience:
For me, that 3-part combo is almost like a triple-o sauce of its own. White Spot’s clam chowder soup has taken flack over the years (”There was a time once when it actually came with clams,” you’ll often hear, half said with jest but with some merit.). It can’t be denied, though, that it is an excellent tomatoe-based soup and a great way to kick off a meal.
Another key part of this meal for me comes within the platter. The combination (yet again in 3’s) of the french fries with vinegar and ketchup, the scoop of coleslaw, and then the burger itself all amounts to one hearty and tasty main course.
Throw in the Coke for good measure with a water as well, and you have the perfect bevvies to wash it all down. (In spite of my beer-loving ways, I have to say that a Coke actually goes better with this meal than the Nat’s Pale Ale. Blame it on childhood tradition.)
It’s not a meal for the calorie-conscious, I also wouldn’t recommend it as fuel for your next 10k run. But if you got your workout for the day done, check off the yang, and indulge in this yin.
I like their legendary burger… but I must say they need to fix their marketing! Umberrrrto… and the red seal chefs? I get the goose bumps from those commercials.
I totally agree. But I bet that’s not stopping you from getting your Legendary fix now is it? Yeah, me neither
